From European orientalisation to self-orientalisation to Asian orientalisation as a result of westernization. Self-portrait, is a south-to-south invitation to create a third conversation where identities are not “incavated” but excavated.
Contact Improvisation co-founders, Nancy Stark-Smith and Steve Paxton, understood that to keep dancing this form they had to survive it. Exploring disorientation techniques as a way to let go of consciousness became the dance. In my improvised solo, I rely on basic Contact Improv disorientation techniques to create the momentary landscape.
The space is transformed into an archeological site unravelling different identities, reactively and proactively sedimented survival layers.
